My grandmother has always been a very independent person, so I knew I was going to have a fight on my hands when I approached her about giving up her home. I knew she would not be happy in a personal care home, which is why I asked her to move in with me. I wanted to be able to help her, and my husband and kids supported this move. However, she did not. She felt she would be a burden, so it was not surprising when she did research on senior home care in Long Island.
She had heard about a company that provides excellent care to people who want to remain in their homes but might need some assistance in order to do so. A lot of them just need a helping hand since they are getting older, which is exactly the case for my grandmother. She was still pretty healthy, but she was getting more frail. It was harder for her to clean her home, and cooking was often a struggle. She also wasn’t able to get out as often as she had before because it was just too hard for her to catch the bus.
If I did not have to work and did not live nearly an hour away, it would not have been a problem to help her on a daily basis. I was getting exhausted though, so this was the perfect solution for both of us. The care personnel that came out really helped my grandmother with so many things, but there was an added perk that I had not counted on. When she first told me about this company, I just thought it would be formal and impersonal. I could not have been more wrong though. The people who come out have grown to become her friends, and she is so much happier now!
